NIAC Publishes Transcripts and Video of Human Rights Conference on Capitol Hill

Washington, DC (IssuesWire) August 24, 2007 -- The transcripts and video of the National Iranian American Council's conference on Human Rights in Iran on July 26, 2007 on Capitol Hill are now available online. The conference, titled "Human Rights in Iran and US foreign policy op" featured numerous high-power speakers, including Alex Arriaga (Amnesty International), Joe Stork (Human Rights Watch), John Tirman (MIT), Laura Secor (The New Yorker) as well as Congressmen Jim Moran (D-VA), Mike Honda (D-CA) and Tom Tancredo (R-CO).
The conference addressed both the deteriorating human rights situation in Iran, with intensified clampdowns on Iran's civil society, as well as the options the US should and shouldn't pursue when addressing human rights in Iran. Full coverage of the event can be found here.
The conference, part of NIAC's US-Iran Policy Program, was sponsored by Amnesty International, the Colombe Foundation, Kenbe Foundation, Open Society Institute, Ploughshares Fund, and Pluralism Fund. Through the US-Iran Policy Program, NIAC will hold two such conferences on Capitol Hill per year, in addition to several Congressional Breakfasts and Staff briefings.
