The United Nations Foundation Joins White House Initiative to Encourage Public Service

The UN Foundation's Nothing But Nets campaign will host a DC event on June 23rd

Washington, D.C. (Issues Wire / Vocus) June 24, 2009 -- This week and throughout the summer, millions of people across the country will respond to the call to service made by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama through a new initiative launched today titled United We Serve. The United Nations Foundation is proud to join the initiative with a service project with a global twist on Tuesday, June 23, 2009. Washington DC's First Lady Michelle Fenty, the UN Foundation's Nothing But Nets Campaign, and the Boys & Girls Club of Greater DC will host a day of activities in Washington, DC to educate young people about malaria and mobilize them to protect children and families living in refugee camps in Africa.

The UN Foundation also pointed to the service project of U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice, who taught middle and high school students at the Harlem Children's Zone about the situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the work of key UN agencies such as UNICEF to help provide relief and emergency supplies. She and other leading officials of the Obama Administration participated in service projects in cities all over America.

"By including the UN and global issues in this summer's activities, the Administration is demonstrating that international engagement - big or small - can bring about common understanding about our biggest, most challenging programs around the world," said Kathy Calvin, COO and Executive Vice President, UN Foundation.

For more than a decade, the UN Foundation has engaged communities around the country - including young people, faith leaders, and local activists - in the work of the UN. The Foundation has hosted more than 20,000 events, including debates and town halls where people have come together to discuss issues such as nuclear disarmament, the Millennium Development Goals, and climate change. Most recently, in more than a dozen cities, the Foundation has hosted educational "boot camps" where young children can learn about malaria and ways that they can make a difference in the lives of women and children in Africa.

The UN Foundation is proud to partner with the White House and the Corporation for National and Community Service on United We Serve. The Foundation encourages everyone to join the First Family, Ambassador Rice and the UN Foundation in this important initiative to mobilize millions to make change in their local community and their world.
