Doe Run Begins Fence Construction in Herculaneum

Fencing marks one of several 2008 improvement projects under State Implementation Plan.

Herculaneum, Mo. (Issues Wire / PRWEB) March 5, 2008 -- The Doe Run Company will soon begin construction of a new fence around its Herculaneum smelter. The fencing is one of several improvements being implemented in 2008, which are outlined in the State Implementation Plan (SIP).

he SIP process is used throughout the United States to improve air quality and help achieve federal air standards. The SIP for Herculaneum was revised in 2007 to help reach consistent attainment of the National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) for lead. The new fence line will help Doe Run reduce environmental impact by establishing more space between the community and the smelter.

We have chosen a design that also provides an unfettered view of the green space being created in that area
“Our goal for the new fence is twofold. We want to add an additional margin of protection by increasing the distance between us and our nearest neighbor. The green zone will allow us to achieve that goal. We also want to limit access to the plant to control traffic on the roadways and to provide a more secure facility,” said Gary Hughes, general manager of Doe Run’s Herculaneum smelter.

“We have chosen a design that also provides an unfettered view of the green space being created in that area,” Hughes said. “Landscaping will make the area even more aesthetically pleasing.”

Lewisites Landscape Architecture Inc. designed the post-and-cable fence, which will include five gates and stand approximately 5 feet tall. The fence will feature stainless steel poles connected by five strands of 12-guage cable. The poles and cable will be covered with black polymer casing for durability and visual appeal.

Work on the 1-mile fence and landscaped areas is already under way, with project completion slated for this spring. The fence will run along Main Street between Ferry and Station streets, from Station west to Church Street, and south on Church to School Street. The gates will be located along Circle, Curved Street, Main, Parkwood Court and Station.

“We appreciate the community’s support as we continue to minimize the impact of our operations,” Hughes said. “Doe Run has a long history here, and we are committed to working with the city and community to make Herculaneum an even better place to live and work.”
