Bloggers Urged to Continue Campaign Against End Internet Censorship

The Beijing Olympics might be over, but for people in China, their human rights continue to be banned, blocked and denied and bloggers are urged to continue the campaign to end internet censorship.

Sydney, Australia (Issues Wire / PRWEB) September 23, 2008 -- The Beijing Olympics might be over, but for people in China, their human rights continue to be banned, blocked and denied and bloggers are urged to continue the campaign to end internet censorship.

To get involved, bloggers are urged to add a widget to their websites and blogs to highlight the need for human rights reform in China.

The Chinese Government censors a number of websites and blogs, and regularly monitors email activity. Approximately 40 000 staff work on this 'golden firewall' or 'great firewall'. Internet users looking at China's most popular websites see a cartoon cyber-police officer appear every half hour reminding them not to view censored material. Citizens using the internet in café's are required to provide their full name and identification card before using a computer, and many suppliers are subject to random checks and censorship software. Internet users can be imprisoned for sending emails, positing blogs or passing on information deemed to be sensitive, a threat to national sovereignty or a state secret.
