Doe Run’s Buick Mine and Mill Named Safest Large Underground Metal Mine in United States
Prestigious Sentinels of Safety award to be presented in Las Vegas
St. Louis (Issues Wire / PRWEB) September 9, 2008 – The Doe Run Company’s Buick Mine and Mill, part of the company’s Southeast Missouri Mining and Milling Division (SEMO), has earned the highly coveted Sentinels of Safety award for its outstanding safety performance in the Large Underground Metal Mine category. The award honors the facility as the safest large underground metal mine in the country for 2007.
Co-sponsored by the National Mining Association (NMA) and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the Sentinels of Safety awards were developed in part by President Herbert Hoover more than 75 years ago and are recognized as one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious occupational safety awards.

Buick Mine and Mill is a five-time winner of the award, having also received the honor in 1983, 1989, 1994 and 1996.

The annual Sentinels of Safety award program honors outstanding safety achievements in an effort to promote more effective safety programs among the nation’s mineral-extraction industries. To be eligible for the award, underground metal mining operations must report employment data to MSHA for each active quarter during the calendar year, be free of work injuries in the underground sub-unit and surface shops and yard sub-units, have a “no days lost” (NDL) injury-incidence rate no greater than the national average for these same sub-units and have accumulated at least 4,000 employee-hours in these same sub-units during the calendar year.
