Doe Run Peru Reports Additional Improvements in La Oroya Air Quality

Monitoring of air emissions in La Oroya near Doe Run Peru's metallurgical facility in La Oroya confirm continued significant improvements in air levels of arsenic and cadmium in the Andean community.

(Issues Wire / PRWEB) March 7, 2008 -- Monitoring of air emissions in La Oroya near Doe Run Peru's metallurgical facility in La Oroya confirm continued significant improvements in air levels of arsenic and cadmium in the Andean community.

For example, measurements taken from the Sindicato air monitoring station identified reductions of 72 percent in the levels of arsenic and 81 percent in the levels of cadmium as compared to readings from 2002.

The company is directing all the required financial, technical and human resources to meet its environmental commitments

Specifically, the levels of arsenic have gone from 3.8 micrograms per cubic meter in 2002 to 1.078 micrograms per cubic meter today. Cadmium, meanwhile, went from 0.15 micrograms per cubic meter to 0.029 micrograms per cubic meter. The results beat by a significant margin environmental targets set as part of Doe Run Peru's environmental operating agreement with the government, known by its acronym, PAMA.

Jose Mogrovejo, Doe Run Peru's vice president for environmental affairs, noted that these important improvements come in addition to previously announced reductions in air lead levels in La Oroya, which were down more than 61 percent in 2007 as compared to 2006. He added that the reductions indicate a sustained pattern of progressive improvement in environmental conditions in La Oroya.

"The company is directing all the required financial, technical and human resources to meet its environmental commitments," Mogrovejo said. "Thanks to these efforts, the company expects to achieve further progressive improvement in La Oroya's air quality."

To date the company has invested $157 million on its PAMA; when all the nine environmental projects included in the agreement are complete the investment is expected to exceed $244 million, 2.3 times the original $107.5 million investment commitment.
