'A Mormon President' Producer/Director: Romney's Big Speech May Only Raise More Questions for the Candidate

Producer Adam Christing believes Mitt Romney faces a "Catch-22" with his upcoming speech on faith.

Los Angeles (Issues Wire / PRWEB) December 6, 2007 -- "It's not Mike Huckabee or Fred Thompson forcing Mitt Romney into a make or break speech about his faith. The candidate forcing Romney's hand today was a Presidential Candidate who ran for the White House 164 years ago."

Adam Christing is referring to Joseph Smith, the controversial Mormon Prophet who ran for President in 1844. Christing is helming a 60-minute TV program now in post production that explores Mitt Romney, Joseph Smith and the Mormon quest for the White House.

"Millions of Evangelical Christians are nervous about a Mormon in the White House because of Joseph Smith's unusual Mormon teachings about God, polygamy and the separation of Church and State," noted Christing who though not a member of the LDS Church, is a member of the Mormon History Association.

Romney declined Christing's request for an interview, but his staffer son viewed the dramatic 2-minute trailer for "A Mormon President." A pre-screening of the film, which features Mormon and "anti" Mormon experts, is scheduled for Salt Lake City on December 12 and Los Angeles on December 19.

Evangelical candidate Mike Huckabee has spent approximately $300,000 in Iowa but leads in polls over Romney who has spent more than $7,000,000 there, something pundits attribute to Romney's religion which appears to be giving Huckabee the edge in the Hawkeye state. All of this has led Romney to give his highly anticipated "I believe" speech.

According to Christing, "If Romney gets specific about some of the unique teachings of his Mormon religion he will only raise more questions. If he skates around the controversial elements of his faith, he will be seen as evasive. It's a classic Catch-22, no-win situation. But he needs to try."

"A Mormon President" is the first documentary film to look at bias against the Mormon Church. Christing says, "Let's face it. Romney would be a shoe-in for the Republican nomination; he's an ideal candidate on all levels except for one. He's a Mormon."
