Production Digital Press Specs: At a Glance -- Industry Measure Releases a New Special Report

Whether you are looking to purchase a digital production press or simply looking to understand the differences between the myriad models, you have a daunting task in front of you. The Industry Measure has created a standardized spec sheet for nearly 100 digital presses sold for commercial graphic arts production, both black-and-white and color, from more than a dozen digital press manufacturers. This report creates an important link between press buyers, industry analysts, and press vendors.

New York (Issues Wire / PRWEB) December 4, 2007 -- The Industry Measure has released a new Special Report, "Production Digital Press Specs: At a Glance (Side-by-Side Comparison of Key Product Specifications),"that lists key specs for nearly 100 presses in the commercial / graphic arts production space, both black-and-white and color, from light production to high-speed inkjet. The report lets readers look at these presses side by side, comparing critical features like engine speed, number of colors, substrates, list prices, and duty cycles. Presses are self-selected by manufacturers as those they consider appropriate for graphic production.

This report creates an important link between press buyers, industry analysts, and press vendors. Not only must those interested in this technology navigate the traditional press vendors like Xeikon, HP Indigo, Kodak, and Xerox, but they must contend with new players like Océ, Ricoh, RISO, Konica Minolta, and IKON. They also have to deal with an exploding variety of imaging systems: dry toner, liquid toner ("liquid ink"), waxy toner, laser, magnetography, and inkjet--not just in direct mail, but in the production space, as well. The challenge has been magnified by the incursion of "light production" machines and the convergence between commercial, direct mail, transactional, and publishing.

With so many presses on the market, how to tell the differences between them? It might seem reasonable that press buyers, industry analysts, and others could simply go to manufacturers' websites and compare one press to another, but the reality is quite different.

The amount of information to mine is voluminous, and while spec sheets are available, they may be inconsistent one to another or not always contain the information researchers are looking for. Is the press simplex or duplex? If it's duplex, is it single-engine? Twin-engine? Simultaneous? How many colors does it offer? What is the resolution? Duty cycle? Sometimes the sheets contain this information. Sometimes they don't. Trying to compare presses within manufacturer product families can be as challenging as trying to compare products across manufacturers.

To simplify the process, the Industry Measure has created a set of specs and created common spec sheet for nearly 100 presses in the commercial / graphic arts production space. These results are contained in "Production Digital Press Specs: At a Glance," the Industry Measure's latest Special Report.

Specs provided for each press include the following:

  • Format (sheet, web)
  • Engine speed
  • Number of colors
  • Simplex/duplex
  • Maximum image and/or paper size
  • Resolution
  • Range of substrates
  • Weights
  • List price
  • Primary niche
  • Imaging type (dry, liquid, or polymerized toner; laser; inkjet)
  • Differentiating factors such as inline finishing, specialized color management, unique imaging processes, and the like.

The report provides some other basic distinctions, as well, including short write-ups preceding each press manufacturer to put its offerings into context.

Manufacturers with products covered in this report include:

Canon       (7 models)
HP Indigo       (9 models)
IBM/InfoSolutions    (1 model)
