Aggrieved Descendants of Freed Slaves Take Message to Politicians' Homes
SaveSandySpring.org reports that residents of an African American kinship community in Sandy Spring, Maryland, claim they are being forced from their ancestral homes. The residents say they plan to deliver their message in person to their politicians' homes by way of a 50' tractor trailer set-up to depict the most rugged of living conditions and a giant banner that reads, "Since you won't let us live on our land, we thought perhaps we could live on yours." The residents claim that the government's recent refusal to recognize the road that has served their properties for more than 100 years has left their property worth pennies on the dollar in a multimillion dollar neighborhood. Troubles began for the property owners when the local planning agency accepted plans for a subdivision which did not include any reference to their road, which dates back to the 1800s. 2008-02-21 (Friend of Issues Wire: 1)
